Frontier Town
1967

Frontier Town was Cedar Point's first themed area. It opened in 1967. Today the area is anchored to Maverick, Steel Vengeance, and Farmhouse, but it's not always been that way. The History of Frontier Town is a story of expansion.

In 1967 the only way to access Frontier Town was by the train. The train would stop in Frontier Town so guests could experience the excitement of the old west. 

Frontier Town is located in the very back of the park. In 1967 the area was really secluded. 

In 1967 Frontier Town was a very small area. It consisted of Shoot-the-Rapids, Round Up, General Store, and the train station. The area also had small bathrooms where Sagebrush Sue's is currently located. 

In 1968 Frontier Town was expanded to include the Palace Theatre, Chuck Wagon, Last Chance Saloon, and Town Hall Museum.

In 1968 Frontier Town would also be connected to the Main Midway with the Frontier Lift. At this point, the only way for guests to access Frontier Town was to either take the Cedar Point and Lake Erie Railroad or Sky Ride. 

1969 saw the largest expansion Frontier Town had ever seen. Cedar Creek Mine Ride, Antique Cars, Plantation Inn, Shooting Gallery, another gift shop, Jitney Arcade, Engine House Custard were added to Frontier Town. Town Hall Museum was also expanded.

In 1972 the Frontier Carousel opened in Frontier Town. The ride came to Cedar Point from Michigan. 

On June 30, 1977, a tornado went through the back half of the Cedar Point peninsula. Many trees were uprooted, Shoot-the-Rapids and Cedar Creek Mine Ride saw some damage,  and a few buildings were damaged. 

Wave Swinger would start to swing its riders in 1979.

White Water Landing replaced Shoot-the-Rapids for the 1982 season. White Water Landing was the longest Hydro Flume in the world when it opened. 

Mean Streak opened in 1991 as the world's tallest and fastest wooden coaster. To access the roller coaster Cedar Point built a train crossing area.

White Water Landing closed in October 2005. During the 2006 season, Frontier Town would see several upgrades to make the area look better. 

Skyhawk opened in 2006. Skyhawk swings riders 125 feet into the air. It was the tallest and fastest ride of its kind in the world when it opened.

Maverick replaced White Water Landing in 2005. The roller coaster is very radical for Cedar Point. Maverick didn't follow Cedar Point's tradition of tallest, and fastest. It is just a fun ride. 

Over the years Mean Streak had fallen out of favor with most park guests. It would close on September 16, 2016.

In 2017 and 2018 Frontier Town received many different upgrades to food locations and gift shops. 

Steel Vengeance opened in 2018. Steel Vengeance was the tallest, fastest, and longest hybrid roller coaster in the world. Steel Vengeance is often considered the best roller coaster in the world. 

Farmhouse opened in 2022. It replaced the Antique Cars.

Antique Cars were located in the middle of Frontier Town. Antique Cars opened in 1969. Riders drove around in small old fashioned style cars. ​

Cedar Creek Mine Ride

This runaway Mine Train will run you through mines and lagoons. Mine Ride takes its riders up 48 feet not once but twice! Just because it's Cedar Point's second oldest coaster doesn't mean it's not thrilling. Mine Ride is an experience like no other!

Cedar Point and Lake Erie Railroad

All Aboard! The Cedar Point and Lake Erie Railroad is a train ride that will take you around the back half of the park. During the ride you will encounter villages of skeletons! The Cedar Point and Lake Erie Railroad has been a family favorite since 1963!

Chuck Wagon

Chuck Wagon was the original sit-down restaurant that would open in Frontier Town in 1968. Over the years the menu would change several times. It would always serve southwestern-style foods.

Emporium

Emporium is a gift shop that is located in Frontier Town near the train station. Emporium serves as the official Gift Shop for Steel Vengeance. You can get some pretty cool Steel Vengeance things here. 

Engine House Custard

Engine Company No 3 Spirits

Frontier Carousel

Frontier Carousel was added to Cedar Point in 1972. The ride was a Dentzel Carousel. It was moved to Dorney Park in 1995.

Frontier Lift

In 1968 Cedar Point opened Frontier Lift. The ride was a second way to get to Frontier Town. Frontier Lift was a sky ride that took riders over the Cedar Point Lagoons. It closed in 1985.

Fun Fact: Frontier Lift's cars replaced Sky Ride's cars in 1986.

Frontier Theater

Los Gatos Cafe

Lusty Lil's Palace Theatre

Maverick

​In 2007 Cedar Point wanted a different style roller coaster. Maverick was known as a ''smaller'' roller coaster. Standing 105 feet tall, Maverick is known as a Blitz Coaster. Maverick stays close to the ground. Riders twist and turn thru canyon at speeds of 70 MPH. Maverick flips riders upside down twice. Maverick is known as one of the best roller coasters in the world. ​

Mean Streak

Mean Streak opened in 1991 as the world's tallest and fastest Wooden Roller Coaster. Mean Streak took riders up 161 feet. Riders would drop 155 feet, reaching speeds of 66 MPH. Mean Streak had an outback around where the ride would go around 3 times. Mean Streak would go over and under itself many times. 

Mean Streak would be known as one of the roughest and most boring roller coaster around. The ride closed in 2016 and was converted into Steel Vengeance. ​

Round Up

Shoot the Rapids

Shoot-the-Rapids opened in 1967 as the major ride for the new Frontier Town section of the park. Shoot -the-Rapids was a log flume that was designed by Arrow Development and built by Cedar Point. The ride closed in 1981 and was replaced with White Water landing. 

Skyhawk

Skyhawk isn't your normal swing ride! Riders swing 125 feet into the sky at speeds of 60 MPH! Skyhawk was the tallest ride of its kind in the world when it opened. 

Snake River Falls

Snake River Falls is an Arrow Dynamics water ride that opened in 1993. Snake River Falls takes riders up 83 feet where they float around in a trough before falling into a pool of water. Since its opening in May 1993, Snake River Falls has been a popular ride!

Swan Boats

Located in Frontier Town, Swan Boats was a small family ride in which riders were able to control their experience by pedaling around in a small pound. In 2004 the ride was relocated to Michigan's Adventure. In 2007 the ride site was used again for Maverick.

Wagon Wheel Pizza

Wagon Wheel Pizza was a great place to get pizza in Frontier Town. The pizza was really good and it was made fresh. 

Wave Swinger

The oldest existing swing ride at Cedar Point can be found in Frontier Town. Wave Swinger swings its riders an astounding 31 feet above the ground!

White Water Landing

White Water Landing opened in 1982 in Frontier Town. White Water Landing was the world's largest Hydro Flume that was ever built when it opened. It was considered Cedar Point's most themed ride. White Water landing was removed in 2005 to make room for Maverick.
