Thunder Canyon is Cedar Point's river rapids ride that is located at the end of the Frontier Trail.

In 1977, Cedar Point expanded the Corkscrew Midway with the addition of Witches' Wheel. In 1978, Gemini debuted as the world’s tallest and fastest racing roller coaster. The park continued its growth in 1979 with a new children’s area, a new WildCat coaster, and Wave Swinger.

Oceana opened in 1980 as Cedar Point’s marine life complex, followed by Ocean Motion in 1981. In 1982, White Water Landing made its debut as the tallest and longest hydro flume in the world at the time. Demon Drop opened in 1983 as Cedar Point’s first free-fall ride.

Avalanche Run premiered in 1985 as the park’s bobsled roller coaster. Although it was advertised as being more thrilling than Gemini, it failed to meet expectations.

Thunder Canyon is a fantastic ride for families. The flume follows a sloped path that gently flows downhill, offering a smooth experience with no major drops.

Thunder Canyon was built by Intamin AG of Switzerland. Over the years, Intamin has designed several other iconic rides for Cedar Point, including Jr. Gemini (1979), Avalanche Run (1985-1989), Millennium Force (2000), Wicked Twister (2002-2021), Top Thrill Dragster (2003-2021), Maverick (2007), and Shoot the Rapids (2010-2015). These Intamin rides have consistently been among the most popular attractions in the park.

Thunder Canyon's flume stretches 1,600 feet in length and requires 900,000 gallons of water to fill the ride.

Thunder Canyon is located on the Frontier Trail, positioned between The Glass Blowing Experience and The Barnyard.

Thunder Canyon uses water from Lake Erie, which is stored in a reservoir located within the lake.

Thunder Canyon receives fresh water daily from Lake Erie, with the flume taking about 20-25 minutes to fill. At the end of each day, the water is drained back into the lake after the ride closes.

Ride Expereience

The Thunder Canyon ride experience begins as guests enter the line, which is located on the left side of The Glass Blowing Experience.

As riders make their way through the line for Thunder Canyon, they are treated to beautiful scenery and scenic waterfalls. The ride immerses you in the spirit of the old West.

Thunder Canyon typically has a short wait due to its high capacity. On the busiest days, the longest line is usually around 15 minutes.

Thunder Canyon features 12-passenger rafts, with riders secured in place using a seatbelt.

Riders on Thunder Canyon are loaded into boats via a large, moving turntable.

The turntable moves at a slow pace, ensuring the ride remains continuous and efficient.

After leaving the station, riders are gently lifted up a small lift hill that leads into the flume.

The lift then places the raft into the ride's flume.

Thunder Canyon simulates the experience of white-water rafting through the mountains.

The rafts are lifted and tossed throughout the flume, gently rotating as they move through the ride.

The rafts on Thunder Canyon are free-floating and not on a track. They are guided by gravity and water currents. The heavier the raft, the more it gets tossed around.

At several points throughout the ride, the rafts pass under waterfalls, drenching riders completely!

Thunder Canyon's grand finale sends riders through multiple waterfalls.

After passing through the canyons, the ride returns to the loading deck. In this section, the flume narrows as it approaches the deck.

After leaving the loading deck, guests walk down a water-splashed path that leads to the Frontier Trail.

Thunder Canyon is surrounded by trees, creating the illusion of being deep within a forest.

Thunder Canyon has long been a popular water ride at Cedar Point, and it remains a favorite among families today.
